Printed silk twill scarf, hand rolled, 90x90cm

From 3000 BCE, and throughout what we know as the Minoan civilization, Cretan ceramic art was one of the most refined and accomplished of its day. Its motifs evolved over time: from straight lines to curves, spirals to undulating waves, Cretan potters mastered an infinite decorative repertoire. Figurative motifs – stylized flowers, plants, and fish – also featured in the Cretans’ formal vocabulary. With the construction of the first Cretan palaces (around 2000 BCE), potters entered the island’s royal households, and the art of pottery reached new heights of sophistication, with a vibrant colour palette. Kamares Style, Palace Style… Inspired by the rich formal repertoire of the Cretan craftsmen, this carré is an anthology of motifs, expressed in delicate linear designs and areas of pure colour. From the broad, fan-shaped panel decorated with plant motifs in the centre, to the surrounding patterns of stylized lilies; and from the charming, delicate birds to alignments of geometric forms, the alluring design is a masterpiece of expressive simplicity, a consummate work of decorative art. An expression of timeless beauty, down the ages.
